 Everything you need to know!
The very word 'veil', can bring fear in to the eyes of most brides to be - it seems to be a minefield of lengths, layers and detailing. Some of you will know you definitely want a veil, others like me definitely don't (that said, I walked down the aisle sporting a chapel length, 2 tiered, embroidered and beaded number - so figure that out!) And the expense!! Well, it seems like such a lot of money for a bit of net - no matter how beautiful and bridal it makes you feel. From experience, even the most adamant of veil haters often come round to the idea once they start trying on. So it's worth taking the plunge, keep an open mind and give it a go - Wikipedia defines a veil as 'an article of clothing or hanging cloth that is intended to cover some part of the head or face or an object of some significance. The first veil made its appearance back in 1100BC. In modern day times, veils covering the hair and face became a symbolic reference to the virginity of the bride! To make things a little easier and not quite so scary, here's brief run down of your veiling options.... Do you or don't you? My feeling is this, fingers crossed, you will only be a bride once, so, have everything......wear a veil. Lengths Ok...as a general rule the lengths of veils are something similar to the image opposite, and it's very much a personal choice if you go for a shoulder length bridal wedding veil or a cathedral length. One or two things to consider, number 1, your venue, a church with a long wide aisle would show off a cathedral length wedding veil to perfection but a registry office may not, and the veil may be more of a hindrance. Number 2, how long through the day will you keep your veil on? It stands to reason a shorter waist length bridal veil would be easier to wear and you may keep it on longer through the day, although beautiful, the longer the veil the more difficult to manage. Of course, wedding veils can be made to whatever length is required, so if you want something longer than a cathedral length it's definitely doable but remember to borrow your parents credit card when you go to order! Tiers So next question....how many tiers? For years, 2 tiers or 2 layers of tulle was the way to go, but in more recent times, the single layer veil has become increasingly popular particularly with the lace edge that is so on trend at the moment. Of course we have seen veils with up to 6 layers of tulle, (think 1980's) but strangely not so much in demand these days :) Edging and detailing Once decide on the length and tiers, the next choice is edging and detailing, lace, crystals, pearls, so much to choose from and very much a personal choice. To help you along the way it's often worth referring to your gown. So for example, a lace dress usually means a lace edge veil and a simple elegant dress could maybe carry a more detailed veil with a sparkle. As for edging, a veil can have a plain cut edge, such as our Chloe full length bridal veil or the ever popular satin edge such as our Eleanor Short Bridal Veil, or any of the many other types of embroidery or beaded edge. Personal preference comes into play here, there is no right or wrong. Buy what you like the look of, it's YOUR choice. Most veils will be available in white, ivory, with a few being available in other colours such as champagne, honey gold, blush pink, pale blue. Most of these colours will be custom made so non returnable or refundable. Bridal veils have a comb attached so they are easy to pop in your hair and would usually (but not always) be worn with a tiara or hair accessory. Some of the single layer veils have a comb included, but not sewn on, giving the option to have the veil draped over the hair and held in place with clips or pins. Finally the question of whether to wear your veil over you face? The answer....it's very much a personal choice, there are no rules nowadays. Try it at your fittings or your hair trials. It doesn't suit everybody and there is always the problem of lifting the veil through the ceremony- but if you can get past that...how beautiful, traditional and bridal would you look and feel?
